Dengue Fever: Give me the Facts!

What is it?
Dengue Fever is a disease that you can contract from the bite of a particular type of mosquito that is active during the daytime. Below is a link to a very detailed medical video about Dengue Fever (however, it is in Spanish! - You expats should be practicing anyway!)

El dengue es una enfermedad que podés contraer a través de la picadura de un tipo particular de mosquito que está activo durante el día. Debajo hay un enlace a un video médico muy detallado sobre el dengue, en castellano.

What are the symptoms?
severe headache muscle and joint pain - dengue fever is sometimes referred to as break-bone fever due to the severe muscle and joint pain it can cause pain behind your eyes, especially when you move your eyes
flushing of your face
sickness and vomiting
a bumpy, red rash (called a maculopapular rash) which starts on your chest, back or stomach and spreads to your limbs and face

¿Cuáles son los síntomas?
Dolores de cabeza severos y dolor en las articulaciones- a veces se denomina al dengue "fiebre rompe-huesos" debido a los graves dolores que causa en articulaciones y músculos. Puede causar dolor detrás de los ojos, en especial al moverlos.

Una erupcion roja irregular (se llama enrupcion maculopapular) que empieza por el pecho, espalda o estómago y que se extiende a los brazos, piernas y cara.

What can I do to be safe?
Unfortunately, there is no preventative injection or medicine that you can take, as is the case with malaria. Public awareness and attention paid to the effects of the disease are not as strong as that paid to HIV, for instance, and so less money is pumped into scientific research aimed at studying the disease and finding further ways to combat it. Therefore wearing long sleeves and long trousers is a must. Similarly, the regular application of a strong insect repellent (at least 30% deet) should be a daily routine. Avoid areas of stagnant water where mosquitoes tend to breed and hang out and be aware of the symptoms stated earlier on in this blog. Seek medical attention immediately if you’re concerned.

¿Qué puedo hacer para mantenerme sano?
Lamentablemente no existe una vacuna o medicación preventiva que puedas tomar, como ocurre con la malaria. La información del público y la atención prestada a los efectos de esta enfermedad no son tantos como con el HIV, por ejemplo, y por lo tanto se inyecta menos dinero a las investigaciones científicas específicamente dirigidas a estudiar la enfermedad y encontrar más opciones para combatirla. Por lo tanto, es fundamental utilizar camisas y pantalones de mangas largas, así como aplicar regularmente repelentes potentes (con al menos 30% DEET). Hay que evitar las áreas de aguas estancadas donde los mosquitos se reproducen, además de prestar atención a los síntomas ya mencionados. Ante cualquier duda, buscá atención médica inmediatamente.
